Core Exercises for Cyclists

Having just recovered from the flu-like symptoms which I traced back from my Good Friday all-day ride, I’m left with a weakened immune system and some additional girth (huhuhu…), due to not being able to bike for several weeks. I therefore reaffirm (to myself) to go pedal. I also realize that I have to go work on my core muscles too, as cycling alone doesn’t immediately help me lose my “paunch”, but working my core has direct effects on making me a more efficient cyclist (or bike commuter that is).

I just found this article on Bicycling magazine on some core exercises you can do at home, in between bike days. Note that some of the exercises require that you have a stability ball.

Bicycling Magazine – Core: Here’s how to train the most important muscles for cycling.

As with all exercises, the author notes that it should always be coupled with a proper diet. I’ve recently read an article about osteopoenia in cyclists, so make sure to also drink your milk or take your calcium supplements.
